Hillfarrance
This traditional cob longhouse had suffered many floods throughout the years. As a result, when removing the cement renders, a large proportion of the front elevation had disintegrated therefore giving way. Due to the cob being kept damp for a long period of time, the natural binder which gave it strength, i.e. straw, had rotted and eroded leaving the cob with no structural integrity, hence the collapse as seen. We removed all decayed cob work and reinstated with 300 premade cob blocks, laid on a cob mortar bed. With all the cob repaired and structurally sound the building received full lime render works with sympathetic finish and full pigmented lime washing.
Wiveliscombe, Somerset
This Georgian property had been pointed with cement based mortars within the past 30 years, thus leading to erosion of stone faces and even more severe dishing and complete breakdown of clay set brick work. The project required respectful replacement of structural brick coins and faces, as well as stone repairs and rebuilds. The stabilised wall then received full specialist lime pointing. Mortar was a bespoke mix of local sands and stone dusts to achieve a sympathetic and tasteful tone and texture to the front facing elevation. Timber portico to undergo full restoration works during summer 2009.
Skilgate, Devon
This beautiful 15th Century farm cottage under went full lime putty render works. The property was very interesting due to its organic method of build development: the ground floor was evident of local slate walling, whilst the second floor elevation (carried out in the 1800`s) saw the use of traditional cob works. Both mediums took careful handling with application and tending due to different rates of curing and suction of moisture. We applied a five coat application of ocra limewash with a percentage of casein additive for increased durability.
Purseys Cottage, Stogumber
This 15th Century thatched, cob-built cottage had its unsuitable cement render jacket removed. In its place, a specialist application of 12 tonnes of lime putty render was applied. This was completed by an `antique white` limewash finish.
The Old Dairy
Following additional stone repairs, this sandstone rubble-built townhouse was completely re-pointed with a lime putty pigmented mortar.
Long Sutton
This blue lias built cottage needed a complete re-point to all external faces and boundary walls. A wood ash lime putty pointing mix was blended for this application, and tended in a recessed pointing style with a subtle tone and texture to the joint work. A small amount of re-builds were needed mainly for face repairs and existing repair replacement.
Axbridge
A mid-terrace 18th Century Grade II Listed town house in desperate need of full lime render works and conservation of dilapidated plaster moldings and columned fluting. Works scheduled for summer 2009.
